Reels usually outperform static posts and carousels on the same account. Saves and shares carry more weight in distribution than likes do, so include them if your analytics report them.
Account size shifts these bands. Small accounts commonly run two to four times higher than large ones on identical content, because reach is concentrated among people who actively chose to follow. Compare against accounts of a similar size in your own category, and against your own trailing average, before reading a band as good or bad.

The two formulas, and when to use each
Engagement rate by followers is the version quoted almost everywhere: ER = (likes + comments + shares + saves) / followers x 100. It is popular because followers is the one number anyone can see from outside an account, which makes it the default for influencer vetting and competitive comparison. Its weakness is that the denominator has nothing to do with who saw the post. An account that gained 40,000 followers during a viral month and then went quiet will show a collapsing engagement rate even if the content is performing exactly as it did before.
Engagement rate by reach fixes that: ER = (likes + comments + shares + saves) / reach x 100. Reach is the number of unique accounts that actually saw the post, so this measures how compelling the content was to the people exposed to it rather than how many people follow you. It is the better internal metric and it is the one to use when you are judging creative rather than audience size. It is only available from your own analytics, which is why the field here is optional.
Expect the reach-based number to be substantially higher than the follower-based one, and expect the gap to be widest on Facebook and YouTube where organic distribution reaches only a slice of your following. Never compare a reach-based rate against a follower-based benchmark. Doing so is the single most common way engagement gets overstated in a report.
Which interactions to count, and why saves matter more than likes
There is no universal definition of engagement, which is a real problem when comparing numbers between tools. Most published benchmarks count likes and comments, and many add shares. Saves are counted less often, largely because they were unavailable in public data for years.
The practical rule: count every interaction your analytics reports, keep the definition constant across every measurement you make, and state which interactions you included whenever you report a figure. A rate calculated on likes and comments alone is not comparable to one that also includes shares and saves, and the gap can be 20% or more on visual platforms.
Weighting matters too, even though the formula treats every interaction equally. Shares and saves are stronger signals than likes, both to the algorithm and as evidence that the content was worth something. A like costs a viewer nothing. A save means they intend to come back to it, and a share means they put their own reputation behind it. Two posts with an identical 4% engagement rate are not equal if one earned it in likes and the other in saves and shares. If your analytics separates them, look at the composition, not just the total.
Benchmarks shift with account size, so compare like with like
Smaller accounts consistently post higher engagement rates than larger ones on identical content, typically two to four times higher. This is not a quirk of measurement, it is structural. A 3,000-follower account is followed mostly by people with a genuine reason to be there, and its reach is concentrated among them. A million-follower account carries years of accumulated dormant followers, so the denominator grows faster than the number of people who still care.
The consequence for benchmarking is direct: a 2% Instagram rate on a 500,000-follower brand account can be a stronger result than a 6% rate on a 2,000-follower account, and comparing them against the same threshold is meaningless. When you vet a creator for a partnership, compare them against creators in the same follower band and the same category, not against a global average. When you assess your own account, the most useful comparison is against your own trailing average, because it holds account size, category, and audience constant automatically.
A suspiciously high rate on a large account deserves a second look. Engagement bought through pods or purchased comments shows up as high volume with generic comment text and a like-to-comment ratio that does not match the rest of the category. A rate far above the top-tier band for the platform is worth investigating rather than celebrating.
A worked example
An Instagram account has 18,400 followers. Across its last 12 posts it averages 640 likes, 47 comments, 22 shares, and 61 saves, with an average reach of 9,800 accounts.
Total interactions = 640 + 47 + 22 + 61 = 770.
Engagement rate by followers = 770 / 18,400 x 100 = 4.18%. On the Instagram bands that lands in the Strong tier of 3% to 6%, above the 1% to 3% typical range.
Engagement rate by reach = 770 / 9,800 x 100 = 7.86%, which is what the content achieved among the people who actually saw it. The gap between 4.18% and 7.86% exists because reach was only 53% of the follower count, which is normal.
Now read the composition. Saves and shares together are 83 of the 770 interactions, about 11%. That is a healthy share for a content account and a signal the posts have some reference value rather than just being pleasant to scroll past. If the same 4.18% had been earned with 760 likes and 10 everything-else, the headline number would be identical and the content would be doing considerably less work. Recalculate monthly on a rolling 10 to 12 posts so a single outlier does not move the average.
