What the table does not tell you
- Instagram moved the profile grid preview from square to 3:4 in 2025. Anything designed before that is being cropped on your profile even though it looks right in feed.
- If a post might ever be promoted, shoot it at 4:5. A 3:4 post is rejected at the Ads Manager stage, and re-cropping after the fact loses the composition.
- Keep text and faces inside a centred square. That area survives every crop Instagram applies across feed, grid and share sheets, and none of those crops are documented, so leaving margin is the only defence.
- Export at 1080 px wide and no wider. Instagram documents that it keeps 320 to 1080 px as uploaded and downsizes anything larger, so a 4000 px file just hands the compressor more to throw away.

Is the square Instagram post dead?

What size should an Instagram carousel be?
1080 x 1350 for every slide. Meta documents that carousel images are cropped to the first image's ratio, so a mismatched second slide gets cropped rather than resized.
Why does my Instagram post look cropped on my profile?
