TikTok Username Ideas: 112 Names for Short-Form Creators
Quick answer
A good TikTok username tells a viewer what they will get before they open the profile, because the handle travels with every video. Name the format or the subject, as in storytimewithsky or tidyhometricks, and stay within TikTok's limit of 24 characters.
TikTok username rules
Every name below was checked against these limits. Availability is the one thing a list cannot check: it changes by the minute, so confirm a name in the TikTok app before you build anything on it.
| Rule | What TikTok allows |
|---|---|
| Minimum length | 2 characters |
| Maximum length | 24 characters |
| Allowed characters | Letters, numbers, underscores and periods |
| Placement rules | A period cannot be the last character |
| How often you can change it | Once every 30 days |
| What happens to the old name | Held for a short period before it can be used againTikTok does not say how long. Changing the username also changes the profile link. |
| Claiming a taken name | Usernames are generally not reassignedAn account unused for 180 days or more may have its username reset to random numbers, but TikTok says that in most instances it cannot reassign a name. |
| Display name | Up to 30 characters, changeable once every 7 daysTikTok calls this the nickname. |

Choosing one you will not regret
- TikTok allows a username change once every 30 days, so a rename is a commitment. Test the new handle on a friend before you save it, because a typo or a second thought has to wait out the full period.
- Changing the username changes your profile link. Links in other people's bios, in your own older captions and on anything printed stop working, so update the places you control on the same day you rename.
- The nickname is a separate field that holds up to 30 characters, changeable once every 7 days. Use it for the readable version with spaces and capitals, and keep the username compact, because the username is what people type to tag you.
- Name the series and not the trend. A handle built on a sound or a meme dates within months, while one built on your format, such as a daily tip or a weekly story, still fits after the trend has gone.
Common questions
How long can a TikTok username be?
Between 2 characters and 24 characters, according to TikTok's support pages. Aim well under the maximum. A shorter handle is easier to read under a video and easier to type in a tag.
What characters are allowed in a TikTok username?
TikTok allows letters, numbers, underscores and periods, and a period cannot be the last character. Its support page says usernames can only contain those characters, so spaces, hyphens and symbols are not accepted.
How often can you change your TikTok username?
TikTok allows a change once every 30 days. Each change also changes your profile link, and the name you gave up is held for a short period before it can be used again, so you cannot switch straight back.
Can I take a TikTok username from an inactive account?
Generally not. TikTok's inactive account policy says an account unused for 180 days or more may have its username reset to random numbers, but also that in most instances it cannot reassign a username. Its own suggestion is to use a variation.
Is a TikTok username the same as a nickname?
No. The username is the unique handle after the @ sign and forms your profile link. The nickname is the name shown on your profile. It is a separate field with its own length limit and its own rule on how often it can change.
The name is the easy part
An account grows on what it posts after the handle is chosen. Crowbert plans, writes and schedules that content across your platforms, and you approve it.
