Twitter Username Ideas: 112 Handles That Fit X's Limit
Quick answer
A good X username is short enough to leave room in a reply and plain enough to type from memory. X allows at most 15 characters and only letters, numbers and underscores, so drop the filler words and keep the one that identifies you, as in mayabuilds or crumbcritic.
X username rules
Every name below was checked against these limits. Availability is the one thing a list cannot check: it changes by the minute, so confirm a name in the X app before you build anything on it.
| Rule | What X allows |
|---|---|
| Minimum length | More than 4 charactersThat is X's wording, and read literally it means 5 or more. Many guides say 4. Every name in these lists uses at least 5. |
| Maximum length | 15 charactersSome older accounts have longer names. |
| Allowed characters | Letters, numbers and underscores |
| Placement rules | Cannot contain the word AdminX's rules page pairs Admin with the word X, which took the place of Twitter in that sentence after the rebrand. |
| How often you can change it | At any time |
| What happens to the old name | Released immediately for anyone to take |
| Claiming a taken name | Inactive usernames are not releasedTrademark owners are pointed to X's trademark policy. |
| Display name | Up to 50 characters, changeable at any time |

Choosing one you will not regret
- On X a changed username is released immediately for anyone to take. There is no grace period, so if you are only trying out a new handle, accept that the old one may be gone when you come back for it.
- With so few characters, spend them on the noun. Filler such as the, its and hey costs three characters each time and tells a reader nothing about what you post.
- The display name holds up to 50 characters, changeable at any time, so it can carry your full name or your title. Let the username be the compact version and do not try to fit both into it.
- An underscore is the only separator X accepts. Use one where two words would otherwise blur together, as in footnote_club, and leave it out where the words read cleanly without it.
Common questions
How long can a Twitter username be?
No more than 15 characters. For the minimum, X's help page says a username must be more than 4 characters, which read literally means at least five. X's developer documentation notes that some older accounts have longer names than a new sign-up can choose.
What characters are allowed in a Twitter username?
Only letters, numbers and underscores. Spaces, periods, hyphens and symbols are not accepted, and a username cannot contain the word Admin.
How often can you change your username on X?
X says you can change it at any time, provided the new name is not already taken. The catch is what happens to the old one: it is released immediately for anyone to take.
Can I claim an inactive Twitter username?
No. X's inactive account policy says it cannot release inactive usernames. If the name is your registered trademark, X directs you to its trademark policy, and the decision is X's to make.
Is it still called a Twitter handle?
The platform is named X, and its help pages now say X username. People still search for and say Twitter handle, and both mean the same thing: the unique name that follows the @ sign.
The name is the easy part
An account grows on what it posts after the handle is chosen. Crowbert plans, writes and schedules that content across your platforms, and you approve it.
