Facebook Post Size: 1200 x 630 for Links, and What Else
Quick answer
For a link post, Meta documents 1200 x 630 pixels at a 1.91:1 ratio, with 200 x 200 the absolute minimum and 8 MB the file ceiling. For a plain photo post there is no documented size, and 1200 x 630 or a square 1080 x 1080 both work.

What the table does not tell you
- The 1200 x 630 figure comes from Meta's og:image guidance, which governs link previews. It is the only post size Facebook actually documents, which is why every guide quotes it for everything.
- Below 600 x 315 the link preview collapses from a large image to a small thumbnail beside the text. That is a layout change, not just a quality drop.
- Meta says stay close to 1.91:1 to avoid cropping in feed. Drifting to 16:9 is close enough in practice; drifting to square is not, and the preview gets cut.
- Set og:image explicitly rather than letting Facebook pick. Left to itself it often selects a logo or an interface element from the page.
Stop resizing the same asset five times
Crowbert formats one upload for every platform it publishes to, so a single post image goes out at the right dimensions everywhere without a round trip through a design tool.
Common questions
What size should a Facebook post image be?
1200 x 630 at 1.91:1 for a link post, which is the size Meta documents. For a plain photo post Facebook publishes nothing, and either 1200 x 630 or a square 1080 x 1080 works.
Why is my Facebook link preview showing a tiny image?
The image is under 600 x 315. Below that threshold Facebook switches from the large preview to a small square thumbnail next to the headline.
Does Facebook have a file size limit for images?
Yes, 8 MB for the og:image on a link preview. Exceed it and the image is dropped rather than compressed.
