How to Make a Group on Facebook

By the Crowbert teamUpdated June 2026

Quick answer

To make a group, tap the Menu tab in the Facebook app, choose Groups, then Create group. Name it, pick Public or Private privacy, optionally choose visible or hidden, then tap Create. Invite members, add a cover photo, and write a short description so people know what the group is for.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Open Menu, then Groups

In the mobile app, tap the Menu tab and select Groups.

  2. 2

    Tap Create group

Look for the plus or Create button at the top of the Groups screen.

  3. 3

    Name the group

Use a clear, searchable name. You can rename it later, but frequent renames confuse members.

  4. 4

    Set privacy

Public means anyone can see posts; Private means only members can. Private groups can also be hidden from search.

  5. 5

    Create and invite members

Tap Create, then invite friends or share the group link.

  6. 6

Add a cover photo and description

A description and cover image make the group look active and help it surface in search.

Worth knowing

  • You can change a Private group to Public only if it has fewer than a threshold of members; Public to Private is always allowed.
  • Groups can be linked to a Page so your business can manage the community.

Doing this for a brand, not just an account?

A group turns an audience into a community you can reach without fighting the feed algorithm, which is why consistent posting inside it pays off.

Common questions

Should my group be Public or Private?

Public groups grow faster because posts are visible to non-members and search engines. Private groups get more candid discussion. Many brands start Public for reach and tighten later if needed.

Can my Facebook Page create or own a group?

Yes. Create the group while acting as the Page, or link an existing group from the Page's settings. The Page then appears as the group admin instead of your personal profile.

How do I get the first members?

Invite friends directly during setup, share the group link on your Page and other channels, and seed a few discussion posts so the group is not empty when people arrive.
