How to Make a Post Shareable on Facebook

By the Crowbert teamUpdated June 2026

Quick answer

To make a post shareable, set its audience to Public. When composing, tap the audience selector under your name and choose Public. For an existing post, tap the three-dot menu, open Edit audience, and switch it to Public. Posts limited to Friends or a custom list cannot be reshared by others.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Start a new post

Open Facebook and tap What's on your mind to open the composer.

  2. 2

    Tap the audience selector

It sits under your name and usually shows Friends or your last-used setting.

  3. 3

    Choose Public

Select Public from the list, then tap Done to confirm.

  4. 4

    Publish the post

Post it. A Share button now appears for everyone who sees it.

  5. 5

    Fix an already-published post

Tap the three-dot menu on the post, choose Edit audience, and switch it to Public.

Worth knowing

  • Page posts are always public and shareable by default; the audience selector applies to personal profiles.
  • Posts inside private groups can only be shared within that group, regardless of your settings.

Doing this for a brand, not just an account?

Shareable posts are how organic reach compounds; a scheduler that defaults your brand posts to Public removes the manual check.

Common questions

Why is there no Share button on my post?

The post's audience is not Public. Friends-only and custom-audience posts hide the Share button for viewers. Edit the audience to Public and the button appears.

Can I make all my future posts public by default?

Yes. Go to Settings, then Audience and visibility, then Posts, and set the default audience to Public. Each new post will use that setting until you change it in the composer.

If I change a post to Public later, can people share it retroactively?

Yes. Once the audience is Public, the Share button appears on the existing post and anyone can reshare it from that point on. Earlier viewers just need to see it again.
